Article (a,an,the) คือ คำนำหน้านาม ว่า มีเพียงหนึ่งสิ่งเท่านั้น เช่น แมวหนึ่งตัว cat , ร่มหนึ่งคัน an umbrella เป็นต้น

Countable Noun (คำนามนับได้)

คำนามที่นับได้ ที่เป็นเอกพจน์ (Singular noun) คือคำนามที่กล่าวถึงมีจำนวนเพียงหนึ่ง เท่านั้น ซึ่งคำนามประเภทนี้ต้องนำหน้าด้วย Article (a, an) เสมอ เมื่อกล่าวถึงคำนามนั้นๆ โดยไม่เจาะจง (ถ้าชี้เฉพาะชี้เจาะจงจะใช้ the นำหน้า)

หลักการใช้ a และ an นำหน้าคำนามมีหลักดังนี้ คือ

- คำนามนับได้ที่เป็นเอกพจน์ ถ้าเขียนขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ ต้องใช้ a นำหน้า

a picture , a mango , a teacher , a radio , a tiger , a book

- ถ้าขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ (a, e, i, o, u ) ต้องใช้ an นำหน้า

an elephant , an egg , an orange , an umbrella

* ข้อควรสังเกต* คำนามบางคำแม้จะเขียนขึ้นต้นด้วยตัว สระ (a,e,i,o,u) แต่ถ้าออกเสียงขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ ก็ต้องใช้ a นำหน้า เช่น

university ขึ้นต้นด้วยตัว u แต่ออกเสียงเป็นพยัญชนะ คือ "ย" ก็ต้องใช้ a นำหน้า เป็น a university เช่น Chulalongkorn is a university. จุฬาลงกรณ์เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งหนึ่ง

*** ในทำนองเดียวกัน หากคำนั้นเขียนขึ้นต้นด้วยตัวพยัญชนะ แต่ออกเสียงเป็นเสียงสระ ก็ต้องใช้ an นำหน้า เช่น

hour แม้จะขึ้นต้นด้วยตัวพยัญชนะ "h" แต่ออกเสียงเป็นสระคืออ่านว่า "อาวเออร์" ก็ต้องใช้ anนำหน้า เป็น an hour ( 1 ชั่วโมง)

I wait for you for an hour. ฉันคอยเธอเป็นเวลา 1 ชั่วโมง เป็นต้น

Articles

a, an / the

The words a/an and the are "articles". We divide them into "indefinite" and "definite" like this:

indefinite articles	definite article
a an	the

We use "indefinite" to mean not sure, not certain. "Indefinite" is general.

We use "definite" to mean sure, certain. "Definite" is particular.

When we are talking about one thing in general, we use a or an. When we are talking about one thing in particular, we use the.

Think of the sky at night. In the sky we see millions of stars and 1 moon. So normally we would say:

I saw a star last night.
I saw the moon last night.

Look at these examples:

I was born in a town. John had an omelette for lunch. James Bond ordered a drink. We want to buy an umbrella. Have you got a pen?	The capital of France is Paris. I have found the book that I lost. Have you cleaned the car? There are six eggs in the fridge. Please switch off the TV when you finish.

On this page we talk only about the difference between "a/an" and "the" with singular, countable nouns.

Of course, often we can use a/an or the for the same word. It depends on the situation, not the word. Look at these examples:

We want to buy an umbrella. (Any umbrella, not a particular umbrella.)
Where is the umbrella? (We already have an umbrella. We are looking for our umbrella, a particular umbrella.)

A man and a woman were walking in Oxford Street. The woman saw adress that she liked in a shop. She asked the man if he could buy thedress for her. He said: "Do you think the shop will accept a cheque? I don't have a credit card."
